Sandy made landfall on Oct. 29 and brought with it loss of life, flooding, widespread damages, power outages and major travel disruptions. Millions of people on the East Coast remain without power, and many transportation routes are still shut down. CAAP has researched relief organizations and we are providing donors with a suggested list of organizations effectively responding to the crisis. Below is a list (updated as of Oct. 31) highlighting some of the nonprofits that are on the ground helping afflicted families:
AmeriCares: AmeriCares is delivering water, family emergency kits, medical care and other relief supplies to hard hit communities. Its Emergency Response team is in contact with 130 clinic and response partners, as well as FEMA and voluntary agencies to assess needs and prepare targeted shipments of medicines and relief supplies. American Red Cross: The Red Cross is providing shelter, food, emotional support, and other assistance to victims. It has provided more than 23,000 overnight shelter stays since October 27 across 13 states, mobilized more than 2,300 disaster workers and activated nearly 200 emergency response vehicles that are now circulating through some communities distributing meals, water and snacks. Humane Society of the United States staff members are communicating with dozens of animal shelters and municipal agencies throughout the disaster region to provide animal rescue and coordinate supplies to animal shelters that are taking in animals because of the storm. HSUS’s social media team has already fielded hundreds of inquiries, helping residents in the storm’s path to find pet-friendly shelters so they could get out safely with their pets. Learn more. Islamic Relief USA is working in conjunction with FEMA and the Red Cross in New Jersey to assess needs and offer assistance. Islamic Relief’s Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) is providing shelter, blankets, clothing, food, and other supplies. Learn more. Donate.
Salvation Army: The Salvation Army is prepared for a long-term disaster response and recovery operation. Crews are currently providing food, water, clean-up kits, shelter, first-aid supplies and more to victims in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut. Learn more. Donate.
