In the latest edition of LAU Magazine (from the Lebanese American University), The Center for Arab American Philanthropy (CAAP) received a special mention as the only full services philanthropic organization based on a community foundation model in the Arab American community. Multiple CAAP donors leverage their giving in support of scholarships for students attending LAU by giving through their funds at CAAP. Through this support, these donors are collectively helping to tell a powerful story of Arab American giving.

Elsewhere in LAU’s Spring Issue, Olga Habre argues that as nonprofit organizations are increasingly looking to reduce poverty through income generation (think skill training, microloans and fair trade initiatives), nonprofits should be diversifying their income streams as much as possible. Especially during these shaky economic times, nonprofits should be cultivating individual, corporate, and foundation prospects.

This is where CAAP comes in. Currently in our fourth community grantmaking funding cycle, our general operating support grants are helping to ensure sustainability for grassroots nonprofits serving the Arab American community nationwide. When conducting our grant reviews, we also encourage our grantee organizations to outline a plan for funding their projects and programs beyond CAAP’s support. In addition, through our Teen Grantmaking Initiative, we are taking sustainability one step further by involving the next generation of leaders in the grantmaking process.
