It’s a new month, which means it’s time for the next installment in our Arabic Word of the Month series! Last month, we celebrated Valentine’s Day by highlighting the word for love, ‘al-hub’ (الحب). In keeping with the theme of compassion for others, the word for this month is
the Arabic word for compassion and kindness, حنان (hanan).
‘Hanan’ is another Arabic word that demonstrates the importance of care and compassion in the Arab culture, as well as the tendency for Arabic words to possess multiple meanings. In addition to meaning ‘compassion’ and ‘kindness’, ‘hanan’ also translates to ‘warm-heartedness’ and can be another way of saying the word ‘love’. More importantly, each translation embodies the same overall meaning of care and love; that’s why ‘hanan’ is such a popular Arabic name for females. The adjective form for ‘hanan’ is ‘hanoon’ (حنون), and can be used to describe anyone that is compassionate, loving, or kind.
We hope you enjoyed this month’s word, and hope you continue to join us as we celebrate the beauty of the Arabic language and the generosity and loving nature of the Arab culture.
