The Center for Arab American Philanthropy (CAAP) would like to congratulate Marlo Thomas, a proud Arab American and native of Detroit, on being a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama. The medal is the highest civilian honor in the U.S. commendable contributions to U.S. security, world peace or cultural endeavors.

Actress, producer, social activist and philanthropist Marlo Thomas has advocated for children, family and gender equality all her life. She is known mostly for her lead role as Ann Marie in ABC-TV’s That Girl. In addition, her project Free to Be…You and Me encouraged children to celebrate their individuality and learn to accept others.

Thomas currently serves as the Director of National Outreach for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, founded by her father in 1962. She also founded the Ms. Foundation for Women, which turned women’s hopes and dreams into concrete social and economic justice. She currently serves as an emeritus board member for the foundation.
