The Tuesday after Thanksgiving usually finds Americans worn out and reeling from the whirlwind of shopping that comes with “Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday.” This year, a nonprofit organization in New York teamed up with the United Nations Foundation to launch #GivingTuesday, a campaign to create a national day of giving at the start of the holiday season. To be held annually, #GivingTuesday celebrates and encourages charitable activities that support nonprofit organizations.

On Tuesday November 27, 2012 charities, families, businesses and individuals are coming together to transform the way people think about, talk about and participate in the giving season.

The idea is simple. #GivingTuesday is about finding a way for families, communities, companies and organizations to join in acts of giving. The campaign encourages Americans to share stories of giving back and why it matters. By joining a national celebration of our great tradition of generosity, the idea is to create ways to give more, give better and give smarter. You can follow along with #GivingTuesday on Twitter. We encourage you to consider giving to this Syria humanitarian relief campaign – we’re even offering a match for a limited time!
