AAPIP (Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy) has released a new short film about its Civic Engagement Fund (CEF) for Arab, Middle Eastern, Muslim and South Asian (AMEMSA) communities. The CEF is a San Francisco-based collaborative fund that emerged after 9/11 to build the capacity of new and emerging organizations that serve communities most impacted in this environment. The video shares the story of how and why a group of funders decided to collaborate to build collective community capacity. The video also provides key lessons for philanthropy:

  • Partner with grantmakers to allow for deeper engagement and mitigate risk
  • Resource new and emerging leaders who address unique or persisting challenges
  • Keep up with changing demographics & issues to ensure effective grantmaking
  • Engage in conversation with community organizations from the start
  • Build capacities, relationships and collaborations

These lessons can be applied across the sector in order to make philanthropy more inclusive and effective.
